La Belleza de la Naturaleza o ... ¡Amanecer, Atardecer!

The BEST sunrise of the series... a rare capture, indeed! 


Yes, "The Beauty of Nature"...or...."Sunrise, Sunset!" (indeed, most reminiscent of that lovely, haunting song from Fiddler on the Roof!) ... I have been hard at work on my Spanish...it improves poco de poco, little by little. 

So, the photos you will see are from both Mazunte and San Augustinillo, as before. And...because, so typically, the sunrises and sunsets in a beachside town of Mexico are so stellar, most of the photos are of these....hope I haven't overdone them, but I never tire of such beauty myself!

The reason for the long break between this and the last blog post is because I have been out of commission from virtually ALL electronics for the past 10 days. I was taking part in the Hridaya Meditation Retreat Center's silent retreat--electronics verboten, as it were! I didn't succeed entirely...but 90%. It was tough, I have to say, but ultimately rewarding. I found the peace, tranquility and freedom from the ennui that had been plaguing me...

I was also gifted with a stay at a MUCH nicer cabana: that of a new friend, Paty, an American woman who frequents Hridaya and who took pity on me when I told her about the sad conditions of my "indoor/outdoor" camping situation at Carlos' place. So...while she was in Mexico City for 9 days, she generously let me stay in her unit at Casa Azul, with a balcony and gorgeous view of the sea. Hence, the photo essay that follows which includes the views from that balcony, amongst others. No more needs to be said: enjoy the photos of these scenes that thrilled my heart, mind and soul!


This first series was taken from the terrace of the casa of a Mexican woman I met, Lorena, whose Airbnb I was checking out, thinking of upgrading. Her place was quite nice, though too expensive for my budget and a bit too far from the center of town. But I did get quite a thrill seeing the vista from her terrace, best view I had had of the jungle since the plane ride into Hualtuco! So lush, green and magnificent, as you can see!








The following series was taken at "Sunset Point", a very famous and popular spot in Mazunte for viewing the sunsets each eve. Whole families traipse up here, dragging along small children, coolers and dogs...though sometimes the sentient creatures who protest too much are carried in backpacks, as you will see! It was quite a steep trail down to get to the outermost point, and then the climb back up is truly treacherous--in the dark, by the light of a flashlight... really quite thrilling overall! Certainly well worth it....(another treat: being serenaded by a saxophone soloist!) 






























The next few: sunrise/sunset from Casa Azul's balcony, Paty's lovely abode, as well as one from the middle of the day and another, middle of the night...what a treat for those 9 days! (Not to mention, free of dirt, construction noises and a million crowing roosters!) 



















Not scenery, but my all time favorite butterfly photo...thanks to this poor beauty getting trapped on the screen of Carlos' outdoor kitchen patio. Of course I set it free...

    Beeeuuuutiful! I love it when people pause and watch a sunset. Flipping through your photos was like a micro-sized retreat in itself for me. Thank you!

A mural on one of the side streets here--amazing artistry!  I am including both of these small towns in this post because one is adjacent to the other; the only way I knew I had even passed from Mazunte into S.A. was because I noted a more markedly upscale ambiance to the latter.  They are both charming, country towns that have a vibrant mix of locals and tourists--the “touristas” primarily consisting of scantily clad young hippies! Yes, life in these towns is a little like traveling back in time about half a century. The expat's new adventure: traveling south of the border to Mazunte in the state of Oaxaca!

  Odd, how I always seem to be seated over the airplane wing....this was the view over Mexico City. Lovely clean and clear air, as you can see! Wanting to escape the smoke and terrible air from all the fires on the West Coast, I changed my flight from the original date of October 2nd to September 19th, three days ago. As a result, I was given a pretty horrific itinerary through CheapoAir: about 8 hours of flight time coupled with 10 hours of layover time! So the whole journey wound up being a hellacious, 19 hour ordeal to get to my destination of Mazunte, in the lovely state of Oaxaca. (This included an hour-long taxi ride from where I was picked up at the closest airport at the town of Hualtuco.) Was it all worth it? You betcha!!! Absolutely. Oaxacan Life: Part 10-- Simple Pleasures (Placeres Simples)!

 As I settle into the routines of my daily life here, I find myself infinitely appreciative of the most basic, simple pleasures. Owing to the ongoing tedium of our year-plus world pandemic, I am beyond grateful for my ability to escape the restrictive aspects of the city and high-tail it into the hills and countryside. Accessing these places on foot or by bicycle, I revel in the joys that nature bestows upon us. Equally enjoyable is my weekly swim in the lovely pool that is--miraculously--still open. Of course, like everywhere one goes in public, there is the requisite social distancing, spraying down of body and backpack, temperature-taking and mask-wearing. A nuisance, to be sure, but now a habit--a matter of course-- to be endured. Clearly, so many of the activities we used to take for granted now seem like great privileges.
