I posted a video of my digs on Facebook, but not surprisingly, the file size is too large to upload to this blog... so if you want to see the actual video, you can visit my facebook page:

For my purposes here, I will simply include photos and descriptions.

First night: greeted by a beautiful sunset from "la cabana"!
The VERY steep and rutted dirt road leading from town to my Airbnb here
The opposite of picturesque, la cabana is a structure designed to be utilitarian! As an example: one often sees the water tank on top of the house, or in this case, on top of the outdoor bathroom/shower building. Gravity is used for the water to flow downhill for use... unsightly but certainly quite practical!
Now we enter: living area/dining and kitchen, outdoors but semi-enclosed with screens. This apparently is a trademark of Mazunte! Perhaps other seaside communities as well? All of them certainly have the requisite hammock or two!
The view out of the other side of the enclosed area: pretty, but where Carlos throws the organic matter for the chickens; also boxes of trash just outside and below. Still, have seen some nice sunsets looking out this way!
Indisputably the main attraction of this primitive abode: the view of the countryside and ocean down below. Sometimes in the early morning hours, I hear the faint sound of the waves. The beach is about a 15 min. walk away down the hill and through the town. |
Simple, basic, rustic.... not much to it, to be sure!
Dish washing area: very funky, indeed! water is captured in tubs in and below the sink and used to water the plants! Great conservation, but a pain to have to keep dumping them out! I guess a good workout for my arms and back?!
Another view of el bano, with shower room next to it. Yes, very basic, indeed!
My room: comfy bed, all that I need, actually. My only issue with the room is how hot it gets... I retire here in the eve only, and then with three fans going for it to be bearable!

My Airbnb host, Carlos. He inhabits the only other room, opposite my own. Nice guy, quite a character! Here you see him in his daily routine of shaving both face and head! The fan, he tells me, keeps the dampness off of his scalp and makes shaving smoother and easier!
Generally speaking, it was not a bad place to land. Carlos is a fairly laid back guy, I've grown fond of "Kitty", the NOT-so-laid-back cat (more about her in the next blog post!), and I love the view. What I would have preferred would be less dirt and mud (result of the outdoor bano/shower building and washing area for dishes), less noise (from nearby construction, incessant rooster crowing, bad music, dogs barking and/or fighting, sound of revving motors...), and AC for the room! I personally think it overpriced at $286 per month... especially for a shared situation. But what do I know? Maybe it IS competitive for this area-- seaside town that it is-- and I would certainly pay a heck of a lot more in nice hotel. Mazunte is probably also one of the more affordable seaside towns in the state of Oaxaca, being so low-key, small and rather funky over all.
I am glad that I have only paid for this place here through the end of October... I am sure I will be good and ready to move on by then!
Stay tuned for my next blog post about the myriad critters around here: wild and domestic, large and small, adorable and infuriating!

I loved your FT video! Your Airbnb host is lucky to have you💜 hope you get some cooler weather soon
ReplyDeleteBasic but still looks like a lot of fun to me--all the stories you'll have to tell over the next few weeks! After a few days in a fancy hotel I'm sure boredom must settle in pretty quickly. Here you have all kinds of things to draw and write about, priceless!
