Oaxaca! Part Two: Magical Vista From On High

What better choice could there be for a Friday eve than to head for the hills surrounding Oaxaca, accompanied by my lovely young tour guide, Carolina?! It was an extremely strenuous hike to get to the summit of this one particular peak, but completely worth it, of course. The sky was ever changing and utterly magnificent. Then, the grand finale: Fuego en el cielo! (Fire in the sky...) 





















The owner of the cute pooch you see below was kind enough to take this photo for us... 


Yes, it was indeed chilly up there...even the pooch had his little sweater on!





As the sun finally sinks, the show truly begins...











Yes, fire in the sky... the spectacularly gorgeous grand finale!


As we descended, the city lights winked on... a little hard to see, but they added to the magic of the whole experience.


Enjoying the last view of the city by night, we hustled to get back down, both to keep warm as well as to see where we were walking...was quite a steep descent! Then, about a 20 min. bus ride back home. Ah, to get warm, and cap off the eve with "pan dulce" and hot chocolate! Perfecto!

    Looks like the perfect autumn day: moody, dramatic, and thoroughly unforgettable! I want to go on vacation!!

    I can’t believe how the sky changed from gray to orange! For YOU to say the hike was strenuous it really must have been! Great pictures as usual

A mural on one of the side streets here--amazing artistry!  I am including both of these small towns in this post because one is adjacent to the other; the only way I knew I had even passed from Mazunte into S.A. was because I noted a more markedly upscale ambiance to the latter.  They are both charming, country towns that have a vibrant mix of locals and tourists--the “touristas” primarily consisting of scantily clad young hippies! Yes, life in these towns is a little like traveling back in time about half a century. The only difference is that now the youngsters are covered in tattoos...something you rarely saw back in MY hippie days, anyhow!  What I love is that the locals have successfully fought off corporate endeavors to bring in franchises; all the businesses are clearly run by the locals, and have the charm you would expect. Oaxacan Life: Part Two-- Mi Casa Bonita!

Mi calle, Rufino Tamayo...cobble-stoned, ancient....a dream, to be sure! This is the view looking south, toward the center of town--with the stone aqueduct--known as Los Arquitos, or "little arches"--on the right. Apparently, the aqueduct dates back to the 1700's and was used to supply the town's water all the way up until 1941.  Looking north, toward the hills, and San Felipe de Agua, source of the water that supplies the town of Oaxaca. Mi casa is up a little ways on the right hand side.    I really lucked out when it came to searching for an apartment to rent long-term. I was traipsing all over Oaxaca, responding to a Facebook marketplace page replete with rentals, when I just happened to stumble upon a crumpled "for rent" sign hanging from the gate of a residence I would pass frequently on my excursions (from my Airbnb) into the main part of el centro historico. Oaxacan LIfe: Part 14--- El Día Del Perro Sentado (The Dog Sitting Day!)

 One activity I have sorely missed from my last couple of years living in Sacramento was my side business of dog sitting. Since that opportunity has not been here for me in Oaxaca, I have had to get my "dog fix" as frequently as I can whenever I am out walking. Dogs-- pets and street canines alike--are plentiful in this town, so I can often find opportunities for exchanging pats for licks!   However, nothing can compare with an actual day of dog sitting, and most happily, this opportunity finally landed in my lap! I have a new friend here in town--a Colorado transplant--and she came as a package with her pet "perro":  the cutest little beagle I have ever seen. Although already 6 months old, this precious little Clover has not lost her petite-ness or her puppy-ish little face.
